Donald Trump’s “Transactional Politics,” Unlikely a Blessing for Democracy in Vietnam (or Taiwan)
China and other autocrats will benefit more from Trump’s “rich man politics.”
November 8, 2023 – Today marks a significant milestone for The Vietnamese Magazine as we celebrate our anniversary. Launched on this day in 2017 by a group of committed Vietnamese activists, jurists, and independent journalists, our magazine has steadfastly provided coverage of Vietnam's political scene with an unwavering commitment to human rights and democracy.
As an independent, non-profit online magazine, The Vietnamese Magazine is managed by Legal Initiatives for Vietnam, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in California, United States, with a representative office in Taipei, Taiwan. Over the years, we have endeavored to elevate public awareness about the human rights situation and political development in Vietnam, both locally and internationally.
Our journalistic principles are rooted in truth, fairness, and impartiality. We stand on the shoulders of courageous generations of journalists and human rights activists in Vietnam who have risked everything in pursuing press freedom and a peaceful transition to democracy.
We are also inspired by the likes of Rappler, Malaysiakini, and Prachatai – the trailblazers in media that have played pivotal roles in the democratic progress of neighboring countries.
The Vietnamese Magazine is more than a publication; it is a beacon and platform for every individual who shares our dreams and struggles for a nation governed by the rule of law, where human rights are upheld. It is a place to raise their voices and bring pressing issues to the global forefront.
Reflecting on the past six years, we are profoundly grateful to our readers whose unwavering support has been the lifeblood of The Vietnamese Magazine. Your active engagement and trust have not only allowed us to continue our journalistic endeavors but have also empowered us to serve as a vital conduit for the voices that yearn for a change in Vietnam. We sincerely appreciate the solidarity and commitment you have shown, which in turn fuels our resolve to persist in this vital work.
As we enter another year, we carry the shared victories and challenges that have bound us together to pursue a more accessible and just society. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and for believing in the power of independent media.
When we celebrate this anniversary, we renew our commitment to these ideals and thank our readers and contributors for their unwavering support. Together, we strive for a democratic Vietnam, one story at a time.
